Meet Malina

Malina is excited to share some of her story through our In-Depth Profiles, a NWAE project that empowers teens to speak directly to potential adoptive families. Learn more about In-Depth Profiles.

Is always: listening to great music
Believes in: connecting on shared experiences
Wants: to be successful in school
Is looking for: an understanding and supportive adoptive parent

Malina wanted to sit down and record a conversation that would allow her to directly share about who she is, as well as her thoughts about connecting into the best possible family situation. The quotes are from that conversation.

Malina clearly has an impact on those around her. The words used to describe this cool kid are big, positive, meaningful. Malina is bright. She’s proud and strong. She’s intelligent, aware, open. Malina is honest and a fantastic self-advocate. With her cheeky sense of humor (a “really, really good sense of humor,” says her social worker) and radiant smile, Malina is quick to make friends and to strike up a conversation with those around her. People like Malina, and in turn, Malina seems to really like people.

Like many kids her age, one of Malina’s favorite things to do is chill out and catch up on her favorite reality TV show. She also has a deep interest in all things beauty. Malina is super into experimenting with her hair color and loves to mix it up, finding her perfect shade for the season. Getting her nails done and playing around with makeup are also a couple of Malina’s favorite indulgences. Malina really appreciates a relaxed night in, especially if that includes spending time with her friends.

Recently, Malina has been passionate about her education and anything that helps her to be successful in school. She has been really open about achieving her goals, and she has many, including a future career of helping others as a medical professional. In 9th grade, Malina is determined to do well in school and set herself up for success in the future. She’s a great self-advocate, which is really beneficial inside and outside of school.

Malina has an important relationship with her biological brother and would appreciate an adoptive family who will support and encourage that bond.

An adoptive family who is communicative and supportive is the most important thing to Malina. As she continues to learn and grow into her teenage years, having an adoptive family who can be there for her is essential. Malina would do well in an adoptive family with a strong maternal presence. Older or younger siblings would be great, but Malina would also do well as an only child. Malina is polite, honest, and as she continues to navigate the obstacles of being a teen, would benefit greatly from having an adoptive family to support her and cheer her on.

Beyond the Profile: Getting to collaborate with Malina on this In-Depth Profile gave me a unique window on how smart, honest, and connectable of a teenager she is. I got to see, first hand, that she’s a teen with an impressive personal drive and an urgent sense of self-advocacy. When she talks about having consistent adult supports like adoptive parents, she wields an unmistakable understanding of how having the right people in her life right now could bring about even bigger hopes and even deeper self-acceptance. I felt really lucky to get to collaborate with Malina so she could share the words and perspectives about herself with potential adoptive families. I really hope that families who think they might be a great fit for Malina reach right out to us. We can’t wait to start getting you connected.
