What is Kids' Fest?
Under the auspices of the State of Washington, Division of Children and Family Services (DCFS), Kids’ Fest has been an annual spring event in Seattle and a fall event in Tacoma since 1987.
The Northwest Adoption Exchange has planned and managed Kids’ Fest for over 20 years.
What happens at a Kids' Fest party?
The Kids’ Fest party is two hours of children’s activities amidst a carnival of bright lights and balloons, prizes and gifts, laughter and squeals of delight, and lots and lots of people!
Although no adoption decisions are made at Kids’ Fest, it’s an excellent time for prospective parents to mingle and interact with many of the children. It’s like having mini “visitations” with different kids. It’s an opportunity, too, for parents to network with social workers in person. These workers have other children not at the party that the parents may want to meet!
The immediate goal is for everyone to have fun, especially the children.
Who attends Kids' Fest?
The guests of honor are legally free foster children from throughout Washington State who are registered with WARE; most are between 4 and 12 years of age.
The other special guests are the eligible-to-adopt parents in Washington interested in adopting older children.
And then there are volunteers – NWAE staff and their family and friends; social workers; foster parents; and experienced adoptive parents.
Who invites prospective parents?
WARE, the Washington Adoption Resource Exchange (a project of Northwest Adoption Exchange), publicizes Kids’ Fest weeks ahead of time in its newsletters to child and family social workers throughout the state, as well as to all waiting families registered with WARE.
WARE sends registration forms and promo materials to eligible-to-adopt families and their social workers. Family social workers have responsibility for inviting families they represent, but WARE makes sure that everyone knows about the event and how to register.
