Changes to youth profile access

Every child deserves the chance to experience safe, supportive family connections. Our commitment to that has been at the heart of what we have been doing for the last 50 years. What is changing is how we safeguard the privacy, dignity, and safety of the youth we serve online.

Advances in artificial intelligence, reverse image searching, and other online technologies have made it easier than ever for photos and personal information to be shared or used in ways we cannot control. While youth profiles help connect young people with prospective families, these changes require us to strengthen how we protect their privacy and dignity.

After careful consideration, we've decided to transition all youth profiles to a password-protected system.

What to expect

Starting October 27, 2026, all users must sign in to their NWAE account to view youth profiles and submit inquiries. This includes caseworkers, caregivers, and families.

Already have an account? Just sign in to continue viewing youth profiles and submitting inquiries.

Don't have an account yet? Washington families can apply for an account with an approved home study or current license.

Don’t live in Washington state? Until October 27, families living outside Washington can view some youth profiles like all website visitors. Once this change takes effect, families living outside Washington state can apply for an account to view and inquire about youth on our site by sharing a current home study or license.

Why we're making this change

This change reflects our commitment to supporting young people.

We are not alone in taking this step. Child welfare organizations working across dozens of states are reconsidering the public display of foster youth photos in favor of more targeted recruitment strategies.

Given today's digital environment, this approach strengthens privacy while continuing to support permanency options for youth.
