DIMITRY (4/96) has a sweet smile and a nice sense of humor. He likes to joke around and humor can often bring him out of an unhappy mood. Dimitry is becoming more confident in his abilities and can excel when he has encouragement and the time he needs to achieve his goal. Dimitry loves the outdoors, and enjoys various activities such as riding his bike and playing soccer and touch football. While Dimitry is game for any activity or social time with attentive, caring adults, he may need to be encouraged to join in and then may need some gentle prompts or directions as to what he is supposed to do. Dimitry especially enjoys one-on-one activities with patient adults, such as playing board games, watching TV, or just hanging out. He has a great love for animals and is gentle with them.

Now is seventh grade, Dimitry is at a fifth grade level in Math, and a sixth grade level in Reading and Spelling. He responds best to information designed especially for ‘concrete learners.” Different kinds of visual aids can be very helpful to him, and it can also help to have him repeat instructions back to make sure he comprehends what he is being asked to do.

Dimitry continues to work on dealing with his issues of past trauma, including feelings of grief, loss, anger and shame, and abandonment, as well as his attention difficulties. He will be counting on his adoptive folks to make sure he has the therapeutic supports that the needs for the foreseeable future.

The keys to interacting successfully with Dimitry are patience, good humor, and kindness. Because he is very slow to respond to questions, the adults around him must have the patience to allow him the time he needs. Dimitry feels successful when he the significant folks in his life truly listen to him and hear what he has to say.

The best family for Dimitry will be one where the parents have a good grasp of how early neglect, abuse, and poor adult/child boundaries can impact a child’s sense of safety and well being, as well as his emotional and behavioral development. He also needs a supportive dad who takes has a significant role in parenting. It will be important, too, for his adoptive parents to have a good understanding of the possible residual effects of prenatal exposure to drugs. Dimitry could be an only child, or the youngest of one or two older siblings.
