JASMINE (7/95) is a lovely young lady with an engaging smile and a number of talents. She loves to read and to write poetry. She is very skilled in singing and dancing, and she is a natural athlete. Jasmine enjoys shopping for clothes, getting her nails done, listening to music and spending time with friends. She longs to be part of a nurturing, positive family and would benefit from exposure to healthy interests and activities. Praise, encouragement and other such reinforcements help to build her self-esteem and to motivate her.

Legally free, Jasmine came into foster care in November 2007. There are therapeutic supports in place to help her manage her symptoms associated with attention difficulties, high energy, sadness, and anxiety. In school, Jasmine is at grade level and receives extra supports in reading, writing, and social/behavioral development.

Jasmine has several siblings both older and younger, with whom she has had just limited ongoing contact. She also has a large extended family on her mother’s side and many who care about her but are unable to meet her needs. Jasmine feels these losses very deeply. Jasmine needs a family that understands the grief process and will provide emotional support and remain realistic and patient.

Jasmine is going to need a great deal of support in her adoptive family as well as therapeutic supports to help her develop social and problem solving abilities that will enhance her opportunities to form new relationships. While Jasmine has the capacity to be very likeable, she doesn’t seem yet to have the ability to sustain those good feelings. She tends to test relationships and friendships by arguing, defiance, and manipulation, or by sharing shocking information. At other times she seems to think such behavior will help her be accepted by peers, but when that doesn’t happen, she tends to get adversarial. Jasmine has been able to form some positive relationships, but doesn’t seem yet to have incorporated ‘how to do it’ in her behavioral repertoire.

Jasmine will likely do best with adoptive folk(s) who have a good understanding of the residual effects that past trauma and multiple losses can have on a child’s sense of well being and safety, as well as on her emotional and behavioral development. Because Jasmine has not had much control in her life, her parents will need to be careful about getting into control battles with her. Giving her limited choices could help her to feel some positive control. Older siblings who are emotionally and socially adept could give her a big boost forward in learning appropriate social and problem solving skills. While having family members who are enthusiastic about writing and the performing arts would be ideal, more than anything Jasmine needs parent(s) who will provide one-on-one parental time, attention and a solid commitment.

Being willing to participate with Jasmine in family counseling during her transition into her new home could be a wonderful way for her adoptive parent(s) to show their love and commitment to her. It could also demonstrate to her that her new family approves of using therapeutic support to help family members in their personal growth and to resolve difficulties.
