DaVonni was born profoundly deaf; her hearing is aided with a Cochlear Implant and one hearing aid. She was introduced to sign language in her foster home and at school. American Sign Language is her primary mode of communication. Since receiving her implant she has become safer in her world. She is able to hear and respond to her name. She continues to receive therapy towards more oral communication. DaVonni willingly wears her eye glasses, and after years of wearing patches, the inward turning of her one eye is correcting and her vision is improving. DaVonni, who likes to have her long, dark, curly hair styled in various ways with ribbons and hair bands, loves clothes – particularly shoes! She is able to dress, brush her teeth, and bathe herself but needs help washing her hair. DaVonni loves outdoor activities, such as going to parks and beaches and on field trips with her classmates. She also enjoys participating in Sunday school, and especially enjoys the social hour after church. DaVonni can entertain herself for short periods of time. She loves to do arts and crafts, look at books even though she is not reading yet, make mud pies, dance (she has recently discovered music!), tumble, and swim. DaVonni loves to help out in the kitchen with cooking and setting the table. She even has her own apron. She has a good appetite and enjoys eating a variety of foods, including desserts. DaVonni attends a total communication classroom with kindergarten to second-grade peers. She is enthusiastic about school. However, due to attention difficulties, high energy, and possible residual effects of prenatal drug exposure, DaVonni seems to be falling further and further behind her deaf peers academically. She also seems to be more emotionally vulnerable compared to her classmates. For example, she makes frequent demands for attention of both adults and her peers and she still exhibits temper tantrums at school and in the home. DaVonni enjoys excellent physical health. She has been free of asthmatic symptoms for the past several years and only gets the occasional cold. DaVonni has strong ability to attach to people and she could fit into any family dynamic; she could be an only child or one of many children. She needs a home with consistent and clear rules and routine. It is very important that DaVonni’s new family be able to use American Sign Language fluently, meet her special educational needs and have an understanding of deaf culture. Post-adoption contact with her sibling will be encouraged. |
