Michael’s global developmental delays are due in part to the lack of stimulation during his first four to five months of life. Michael was four months old when he and an older sister came into foster care. While both children were subsequently adopted by the foster parents, the family later realized they were unable to meet Micahel’s needs. They voluntarily placed him in a special foster home certified to care for children with developmental disabilities, and asked that a new permanent home be found for him. Michael is thriving in his current home with parents who understand his needs. The way that Michael has blossomed during recent months in the care of his devoted foster parents has led them to believe that he may be capable of greater developmental progress than originally thought. With that thought in mind, Michael’s worker wants to hear from couples and single moms and dads who have strong support systems of family, friends, and community resources. She is looking for kind, patient, nurturing folks who understand the needs of children with global developmental delays, and who also know that significant early intervention may give a child a huge boost forward. While Michael's parent(s) need to have realistic expectations, they must also be willing to access whatever resources are available that will encourage him to reach his fullest potential. Good parental advocacy skills throughout Michael’s childhood and adolescence will assure that he has the educational, developmental, and vocational services he needs. |
