Lamont and Isaisha, who came into foster care in December 2006, are not yet legally free. Lamont had a positive drug screen at birth, and although Isaisha did not test positive at birth for drugs, it is likely that she had some level of exposure to drugs prenatally. Lamont, who has emotional and psychological special needs related to past trauma, has made tremendous strides within the last six months; the extreme fearfulness and frequent crying fits and head banging that were witnessed previously have decreased significantly, according to his foster mom. The calm, patient, nurturing of his foster family, his participation in individual counseling, and medication therapy have all contributed to helping to lessen his symptoms of past trauma. Lamont also has special needs due to his developmental delays, and he receives services through DDS (Developmental Disabilities Services). He has significant speech difficulties, a phonological disorder, and cognitive delays in the borderline range. Lamont receives special education services at school for speech and his learning issues. He also has weekly speech therapy through a pediatric developmental clinic. In addition, he wears hearing aids to address auditory deficits in both ears. Perhaps because the hearing aids help him to hear so very clearly, he loves them and is very proud of wearing them! Isaisha also has developmental and speech delays. She attends early childhood education classes twice each week, which she loves. The work is focused primarily on increasing her speech and social skills. Isaisha is physically healthy and is not currently in need of counseling. Lamont and Isaisha need adoptive folk(s) who will provide lots of structure and routine in their daily lives, and who understands the needs of children with developmental disabilities. Consistency and predictability are essential in helping the children feel safe and secure. Isaisha, especially, needs the adoptive parent(s) to be patient with her and to understand that it will take her some time to become comfortable with her new family. Of course, they parent(s) need to be strong advocates for whatever services they may need now and in the future. While their special needs can be challenging at time, Lamont and Isaisha will make a loving and joyful addition to any family. These children are eager to start their lives with a new safe and stable family. Lamont and Isaisha have three older siblings who will not be adopted with them. They are close to one another and have a strong sibling bond. The family chosen to adopt Lamont and Isaisha need to be willing to help the children as they are growing up to have some level of contact with these siblings. |
