TREJUANELLE (9/98), who likes to be called “Coco,” and TOMMYLIA (9/00) have strong sibling bonds, and they want the opportunity to grow up together in the same adoptive family. Coco, who is reading at a seventh grade level, is eager to explore the world and learn new things. She is doing well in a regular fourth grade classroom where her favorite subjects are spelling and read. Coco also enjoys drawing and coloring and other forms of artistic express, as well as music and singing. Tommylia is an outgoing and happy child who loves to engage with others – children and adults. She especially enjoys the social aspects of being in second grade. Having adoptive parent(s) who have a love of education and learning to encourage and support her academic development could give her a nice boost forward. With the support of a skilled foster family and therapeutic services, she has grown by leaps and bounds emotionally and behaviorally over the past year or so. Active, loveable, and strong willed, Tommylia likes to be helpful. Some of her favorite pastimes are outdoor activities such as playing baseball, riding her bike, and playing at the local park. Other favorite pastimes are gymnastics, painting and coloring, and swimming.

Although Coco has a tendency to want to parent her younger sibling and sometimes gets a bit bossy with other kids, she is responsive to gentle redirection from caregivers to get back on track. She is participating in counseling to help prepare her for adoption, and she has some dietary supports to help her address some mild food focused behavior.

Structure and routine help both Coco and Tommylia feel safer and more secure (Tommylia also has some mild food focused behaviors). Both girls are responsive to adult guidance, and they have the ability to form new relationships and attachments. They also enjoy good physical health.

Legally free, the girls came into foster care in April 2003 with their younger brother, who is now in his adoptive placement. The girls need to have contact with him as they are growing up. There is an older sister who was their most dependable “parent.” It is hoped that the girls’ adoptive parent(s) will help them maintain contact with her, too, as they are growing up.

Coco and Tommylia have flourished in the wholesome care of their foster homes, and are ready for adoption. The girls need an adoptive family that will see that their needs are met, and who will encourage their continued growth and development. Of course, the children must have parents who will take pride in their heritage and provide opportunities for them to feel connected to the African American community.
