Legally free, ROBERT and WILLIAM (9/03) are handsome, four-year old twins who enjoy arts and crafts, coloring, and painting. William can be quite focused when working on such projects and is extremely proud of his accomplishments. While often shy initially when meeting new folks, William is quick to warm up when a new person interacts with him in calm, positive ways. Robert is very physical and loves to engage in activities like climbing the jungle gym, kicking a ball in the yard, or just chasing bubbles around outdoors. He also loves to play with action figures and pretend that he's a superhero. A favorite pastime is having stories read to him. These darling boys, who are counting on being adopted together, are very responsive to trustworthy adults who are positive and loving.

Some of the boys' special needs, such as William's seizure disorder and asthma and Robert's attention difficulties and high energy, may be related to biological issues (the boys' premature birth at 31 weeks and positive drug screens at birth). While their emotional and behavioral special needs may also have some biological roots, it is thought that they are associated with environmental issues.

WHAT THE WORKER IS LOOKING FOR: 1) Parent(s) able and willing to get the boys' back into mental health treatment with a children's therapist skilled in treating adjustment issues that affect their emotional and behavioral growth and development. 2) Parent(s) willing to learn some of the techniques used by such therapists (and educators) to assist Robert and William at home. The boys need to be surrounded by constant love, encouragement, and support, as well as consistency, logical consequences, supportive structure and constructive "boundaries" in the home. 3) Parents who have a circle of family and friends willing to engage with the boys, expose them to different settings and environments, and help model relationships and appropriate behaviors. It is hoped that among the family's support network there will be children of varying ages from whom the boys can learn to play and interact appropriately.

William is participating in Head Start and has the additional support of a day treatment program where he is currently connected to a child therapist. The playful structure of the classroom setting is extremely well suited to his needs. He is learning how to play and make friends with other children in a therapeutic setting. Although William is still developing self soothing tools, he has shown great strides in learning how to talk about his feelings. He is also amenable to redirection and shows increased ability to manage his behavior when there are social and emotional stressors present.

Robert has made great progress with a therapist in learning to manage his behavior and to talk about his feelings. He continues to learn how to self-sooth and stop escalation of inappropriate behaviors. Robert is now able to make appropriate eye contact when requesting something and has the ability to negotiate with others. He does, though, struggle to stay focused and can become overly stimulated by new and unfamiliar settings. Robert responds positively to adult interaction, especially one-on-one. Robert has not been in a supportive classroom setting that William has recently had and isn't quite as prepared for his Head Start classroom. He is likely going to need lots of support from the school and from home.

Robert and William need adoptive committed, trustworthy adoptive parent(s) to help them become the best that they can be. These loving, affectionate boys are showing wonderful potential.
