STEPHANIE (11/91) is a pretty typical teenage girl in many ways. She enjoys hanging out with friends, listening to music, and watching movies. Stephanie is very smart in school and has the ability to communicate well. She is a very likeable teen who is struggling to find out who she is and what she wants. Stephanie is legally free.

Prior to coming into foster care in November 2003, Stephanie’s life was unstable. Since she has been in care, she has had multiple placements and changes in schools, which have further exacerbated her feelings of loss and abandonment.

In addition to these environmental issues, Stephanie struggles with her identity, trusting adults, and concentrating. Currently, she is benefiting from living in a group home for adolescent girls, where the focus is on helping her with school, work, and assisting her with identifying her communication deficits. Stephanie has realized she needs help with focusing in school and other areas of her life and has expressed a need for medication management.

Stephanie has many goals that she would like to achieve. The biggest goal she has for herself at this time, and is struggling a bit with, is obtaining her high school diploma or GED. Stephanie is a smart and hard working teen. She is currently working (her first job) and really enjoys knowing she is making some money for herself. She has reported she would like to go to college some day and become a teacher or social worker.

Stephanie’s worker is looking for a single mom or a couple who can offer her the understanding, guidance, and tough love that can help her move forward. Having folks who will accept her as one of their own, have a lot of patience, listen to her and talk to her in non-judgmental ways, help her to sort through her feelings, and assist her in setting a few realistic goals could make a world of difference in this teenager’s life. Being willing to participate with her in family counseling during the transition into their home could be a wonderful way for her adoptive folk(s) to demonstrate their love and commitment to her. It would also help to demonstrate that counseling can be a useful tool to help teens and parents come together as a family. It would be particularly helpful for Stephanie’s family to have a good grasp of bi-polar issues and treatment or be willing to learn about them.

Stephanie has significant relationships with her siblings, and she needs to be able to nurture and maintain these important connections. Her sister Brittney is being featured at C6921.
