Legally free, EVAN (11/92) is personable and fun! His worker tells us that he is a “really great kid and less work than meets the eye.” Evan has done incredibly well in two therapeutic group homes. In the first, he earned the highest level of behavioral honors. In the second home, which provided a more open setting, he was also able to build trust and increase his self-esteem. Evan is currently living with relatives and seems to be doing very well. They are very fond of him but cannot be a permanent resource. He needs a family who has plenty of time for him and for helping him complete his education. Having a stay-at-home parent would be great. Evan is very ready to be adopted. This is a young man who has shown his willingness to work with care givers and therapists to help him make changes and to build his confidence.

Evan has many interests, which include his coin collection and video games. He is a good artist, too, and should be encouraged in his drawing and painting. He also likes to hunt with his grandfather in Eastern Washington. Evan is a very concrete thinker with good intelligence.

The time that Evan has been in group care has allowed social workers to get a better handle on what is needed to help manage his mood swings, which have been very challenging for him and others over the years. Evan’s mood shifts require medication therapy to manage. As with other individuals who need to depend on medication therapy, every once in a while a particular medication no longer works well, so frequent medication reviews are needed to help determine when an alternative medication might be needed. These transitional times can be rough for Evan, and he needs to have care givers who understand these issues and have the willingness to hang in there with him over these difficult times. Evan also has some symptoms of past trauma, attention difficulties and high energy. And he may have some learning difficulties in math.

Because school attendance was not stressed during Evan’s early years, he now finds academic work difficult. His adoptive folk(s) should be strong educational advocates who have the time and willingness to encourage and work at home with Evan in completing his homework.

Evan needs his adoptive folk(s) to be able to help him maintain at school and in his every day life. He generally gets along fine with other children, but he is used to being an only child. With the right parenting skills in place – structure, clear rules, expectations, and limits – and a parental approach that doesn’t sweat the small stuff, etc., he could be part of a larger family. Evan is on SSI.
