SAMANTHA (8/95) has a friendly demeanor and a generous, giving heart. This charming young lady loves to please the adults in her life. Samie, as she is fondly called, enjoys talking and her style of communication is very clear. She is a rtistic and creative, too, and often uses those talents to express her feelings. Samie loves animals and family pets. Being very athletic, she loves to ride her bike and play sports. She benefits greatly by having regular opportunities to direct her energy in constructive physical ways that teach her social skills and teamwork.

Samie, who enjoys good health, has auburn hair, hazel eyes, and freckles across her nose, and an engaging smile. She enjoys school very much, despite being easily distracted by peers in the classroom. Currently, her work is close to grade level.

Samie, who came into foster care in August 2002, is legally free. To assist Samie in sorting through and dealing with the significant trauma of her early years, managing her attention difficulties and high energy, and lessening the impact of her mood swings, she has been in various treatment milieus. It is in her current residential treatment setting, though, where she has been able to really move forward. She has made great strides in dealing with her past issues and increasing her self-esteem, and welcomes having a supportive adult nearby to help her stay on track. To keep the momentum going, Samie will, for the foreseeable future, need mental health therapists managing her medication and providing the behavioral, art, and talk therapy that is helping her to open up.

Samie has no siblings. She has great aunts and uncles with whom she would like to have some contact.

Because Samie has asked to have both a mom and a dad in her adoptive family, her worker is especially interested in hearing from couples. Samie would do well in a home in which she is an only child, so that she can have a high level of parental time and attention. Samie needs stability, structure, and consistency that she can depend upon, as well as unconditional love when she acts out. While it is usful for Samie to have options from which to choose, she does best when offered just a few. Too much data coming in simply confuses her. Patience will be a high priority for her adoptive family. To help prepare her adoptive folks for parenting Sami, there will be considerable support and training at the residential facility. The staff will help them to have realistic expectations regarding Samie's behavior and teach them strategies to assist her in monitoring her own behavior.

While life with Samie will be challenging at times, it will be highly rewarding, too. She is fun, energetic, loving, and full of life. Samie truly wants a "growing up" family to help her reach her full potential.
