Kevyn, who came into foster care in February 2005, has been with his therapeutic foster folks since October of that year. In addition to his foster parents, his support system includes on-going individual counseling therapy to help him deal the many changes in his life. Kevyn has clearly demonstrated that he has the ability to benefit from counseling services and is able to learn techniques to help him manage his behavior. Kevyn’s overall progress has been significant, and for the 2007-2008 school year, he is in a regular third-grade program with behavioral supports. He is mainstreamed for physical education, music, art, and recess, and has some services for reading and writing. The goal is for Kevyn to be completely integrated into a mainstream third grade classroom by the end of the school year. Kevyn, who loves school, looks forward to that day. Kevyn, who does best in a calm and structured environment, would benefit from being in a family where he is allowed to transition into his new home and family at his own pace. While he gets along well with other children, it would be advantageous for him to be the youngest child in the family. It would be an act of love and acceptance for his adoptive family to be willing to participate with him in family counseling during the adoption transition. It will also be important for the family to be comfortable advocating for Kevyn's needs within the education setting. |
