TYLER (10/01) is an attractive, physically healthy six-year old. Engaging, eager to please, and charmingly silly, he’s a big fan of super heroes. He has lots of energy and loves the outdoors. He also likes transformers and watching movies. Tyler is eager to learn about the world around him. His most significant relationships these days are with his foster parent and his teachers. Tyler is legally free.

Tyler has made wonderful progress since coming into foster care one and a half years ago, and his foster parent believes he will continue to improve. He is developmentally on track with speech and motor skills, but will need ongoing help with cognitive and learning skills. He needs very consistent, nurturing parenting. He responds well to calm, patient adults who provide consistent behavioral interventions on the home front and in the classroom. Tyler respects his current foster mom and seeks to please her. After being in Head Start for almost two years, he is now in a special education kindergarten program for the 2007-2008 school year, where he has academic and behavioral supports. Despite his sometimes disruptive behavior in the classroom, Tyler wants to achieve and to be well liked.

Having an attentive, caring adult close by to provide very attentive supervision and to redirect him on the spot when needed is important in helping Tyler stay on track. Tyler has not yet developed sufficient inner controls to help him deal with his frustration and anger in appropriate ways, and can still throw a doozy of a tantrum when he’s upset. Attentive supervision also allows him to get the encouragement he often needs when learning something new or trying new tasks. Tyler can get embarrassed when he doesn’t know something or is just learning a new task. On his own, he tends to get discouraged and may just quit. Tyler will benefit, too, from having a safety plan in place in his adoptive home with clear rules, expectations, and limits to help him strengthen his personal boundaries.

Tyler has regular mental health counseling to help him deal with his emotional and behavioral issues related to past trauma and neglect. He does not take any medication.

Tyler has been in foster care since August 2006 due to medical and physical neglect and an unsafe home environment, amidst parental substance abuse and mental health issues. He may have been exposed to alcohol and drugs in utero. When he came into care, he had delays in his speech and language skills, cognitive abilities, and social, emotional and behavioral areas.

Tyler’s worker is especially interested in hearing from two-parent families who have the time and attention to help this little boy continue to reclaim his life and childhood. Strong advocacy skills and experience with children who have behavioral special needs and development delays will be important in helping Tyler reach his full potential. Of course, living in a community with strong educational, counseling, and development program will be important, too.
