Legally free, TREVON (6/99) and TYREK (11/00) are darling boys who need the opportunity to grow up together. Big brother, Trevon is a gentle, sensitive spirit who enjoys singing and is very athletic. Playing basketball and soccer, wrestling, riding his bike, and swimming are just some of his favorite activities. He is also an avid participant in Boy Scouts where he has won lots of medals. Tyrek is a likeable boy, who loves wide open spaces and can spend hours outdoors, running, climbing and getting into mischief. When the weather is dreary outside, you can find the boys indoors playing computer games. Tyrek’s loves the water and could spend all day in a pool, river or lake. His foster family describes him as “a happy spirit.” He is a sweet, quiet natured and creative young man with an eye for details. Both boys have enjoyed participating in organized wrestling and have won a number of medals for their efforts, which they, of course, are proud to show off.

Within a week of coming into foster care in April 2004, Trevon and Tyrek were placed with their current foster parents. They have both made significant progress in this home with therapeutic supports and educational services. Trevon, who is in a mainstream classroom, excels in math but may need support in reading. Tyrek is in a regular education classroom and pulled out for academic supports. He about two years behind in both his academic and emotional development, and continues to receive speech therapy. The biggest challenge in parenting the boys is likely their low threshold for frustration. They will need patient, structured parents with a strong father figure or two in their lives.

Although their worker wants to hear from experienced, two-parent families, he does not want to miss out on hearing from those exceptional single parents who have strong support systems of family, friends, and community resource to draw upon. It will be important, too, for the adoptive folk(s) to have a good grasp of how early neglect amidst parental substance abuse and domestic violence can impact a child’s sense of well being and his development. Of course, they also need to take pride in the boys’ heritage and to provide regular opportunities for them to feel connected to the African American community. The boys report they want a family that enjoys basketball and wrestling and that will allow them to maintain a grandparent like relationship with their current foster family.
