On target developmentally, KEON (7/96) loves being outdoors, riding his bike and skateboarding. Gymnastics is another high-energy sport he enjoys. Other fun pastimes are reading, making origami, and drawing. He does well building things, too. While he, of course, likes video and board games, he sometimes invents his own games to play. He’s really feels good these days about the healthy peer relationships he has developed. Keon has strong speech and language skills, and is very responsive to one-on-one interactions with caring adults. As Keon’s self-esteem is continues to grow, he is taking new pride in things that he does well.

It is very important to know that Keon has developed a healthy attachment to his current foster mom, and readily seeks her out for support and encouragement. It is also good to know that Keon responds well to women and to men in his foster home and that their approval is important to his self-esteem.

Keon came into foster care originally in 1999. Keon experienced a disruption in mid-2006 when his legal guardian was unable to continue to care for him.

With the support of his current foster family and a mental health therapist, Keon has gained important insights. The therapist is assisting Keon in talking about his feelings of abandonment and grief and difficulty trusting adults. The therapist is also using behavioral techniques to help Keon learn healthy ways to express feelings of anger and sadness. Keon is becoming more open with his foster family about his feelings and is increasingly able to own up to his own misbehavior. Counseling and medication therapy are both important components of his treatment that are helping him to better manage his attention difficulties and high energy.

In school, Keon is doing well behaviorally and academically in a mainstream, fifth-grade classroom with pull out services for math and writing. This is a huge improvement over last year, when his disruptive behavior eclipsed his academic work!

Keon is a neat kid who needs to know that he is finally home. Because it will take time to trust that his new folks will truly be there for him, they need to be able to hang in there with him over any rough patches. Having a good grasp of ADHD issues and the ability to access educational and mental health resources will help Keon to be successful. Of course, he needs folk(s) able to help him feel connected to his African American heritage.
