KENYA (7/96) Kenya is very smart. Although he tends to be on the quiet side, he can be quite articulate when he chooses to converse. A likeable preteen, he is very athletic and sports are very positive ways that he connects with other children and with adults. Sports, especially basketball and football, help to boost his self-esteem. Legally free, Kenya came into foster care in June 2004.

Now in the sixth grade, Kenya is at his best academically when his attention difficulties and high energy are being managed with medication and mental health counseling support. He also benefits from having other behavioral supports in the classroom to help him stay on track. Right now, he is learning to treat peers with respect.

Kenya is benefiting socially and emotionally from his participation in a weekly peer counseling group. The focus is on lessening his anxiety by helping him to talk about his feelings of grief, loss, anger, and trauma instead of acting them out.

Being willing to participate with Kenya in family counseling during his transition into their home could be a wonderful way for his adoptive folk(s) to demonstrate their commitment and love for Kenya.

A structured, yet fun-loving family that is active and has clear rules and expectations with consistent boundaries and consequences would be a good fit for Kenya. Currently, loss of privileges and writing sentences are proving to be useful consequences. As a preteen, Kenya’s folk(s) are going to need to make judgments about the degree of independence he can manage, assist him in learning from mistakes, and build his capacity for taking personal responsibility for his choices and actions.

Emotionally and psychologically it is in Kenya’s interest to be able to have regular contact with his birth mother as he is growing up, and there is an open adoption agreement that stipulates contact with his mother. He also needs to have contact with his siblings as he is growing up.
