Austin and his foster parents have strong bonds. The foster family finds that participating in a weekly foster parent support group and consulting with Austin’s counselor has been helpful in developing the kinds of parenting skills and responses that work well with Austin. Austin’s counselor is a “skill builder” who meets with Austin each week to help him make good decisions and be responsible for his behavior. Positive reinforcements are great motivators for Austin, such as pats on the back for a job well done or verbal praise, such as “I knew you could do it.!” Austin likes to please adults, although his impulsiveness can sometimes get in the way following all of the rules. Being willing to access the kinds of community supports mentioned above will go a long way in helping Austin succeed. The family that welcomes Austin into their home should be ready to have fun with sports and creative play. He will do best in a family where he receives lots of individual attention and there is the opportunity regular physical activity. A delightful, affectionate boy, Austin will be a great addition to a family with experienced parents who are able to offer him consistency in daily life and who will take pleasure in helping him grow and learn. Having older teen or young adult siblings in the home could give Austin a nice boost forward.
