JASON (1/95) and KAREN (10/00) are doing great in their current foster home, which is very warm and nurturing, as well as highly structured. The children have strong sibling bonds, and would like to grow up together in the same adoptive home. Jason really responds well to a lot of love and attention from parents and teachers. He works well with others, too, once he has been given very simple, clear, concrete rules and limits, and has attentive guidance from a nearby adult. He also plays appropriately with other children. Around the house, he is very helpful with cleaning and putting things away. Karen, whose learning abilities are about two years below her chronological age, enjoys playing with her dolls and with other children. She is very responsive when caring adults interact with her one-on-one, helping her to understand what is expected of her. Jason and Karen, who came into foster care in April 2005, are legally free.
Jason’s academic abilities in school have developed considerably. Now in a special education seventh grade classroom, he is just a bit below grade level. While he still isn’t quite able to clearly connect cause and effect, having an adult nearby helps him stay on track. Jason is responding well these days to gentle reminders to take care of his personal hygiene.
Karen continues to attend a specialized educational program for children who have developmental delays. She is described by her teacher as a good student who loves to learn new things. Karen does not take any medication, nor is she involved in any kind mental health services.
Jason and Karen’s worker want to hear from couples and from single moms and dads who have experience with kids who have developmental disabilities, who have strong support systems of family and friends, and who know how to advocate for educational, developmental, and other special services. Having patient, kinds, nurturing folks will make a big difference in the quality of lives these children have. The children are eligible for SSI. The children’s adoptive family will be asked to allow some level of openness with their siblings (see C6697 and C6698) and with their birth parents.
