Jeremiah is an attractive boy with a smile that lights up a room. Bright and on-target academically, Jeremiah has settled in remarkably well to current group home filled with other boys. He is thriving with the one-on-one attention he receives from both of his foster parents. He especially enjoys the hugs and praise they give him. Although large for his age, Jeremiah thoroughly enjoys his foster mom’s demonstrations of love and affection and the pats on the back she gives him. He truly wants to please the adults in his life, and his foster folks approach to parenting encourages those efforts. Jeremiah has a passion for art. He would much rather be inside working on an art project and utilizing his skilled hands than playing sports. He loves to be busy and gets himself into mischief when he is bored. He is a little jokester and there is no shortage of laughter around Jeremiah. In the past, he lived in the country where he really enjoyed being around animals and being outdoors. He love horses and would truly enjoy having a horse of his own in his new family.
Jeremiah came into care in early 2004. The chaos and lack of stability during his early years, the death of his birth mother prior to coming into care, and a disrupted adoptive placement have all taken a toll on Jeremiah. This is a boy, though, who is back on his feet and moving forward. Being willing to participate with him in family counseling during the transition into their home and for some months thereafter would be a wonderful way for his adoptive parent(s) to give him a sense of belonging and demonstrate their commitment to him.
Jeremiah responds well to the highly structured environment and consistent schedule in his group home. Every effort is made in the home to make it a safe and emotionally comfortable milieu where expectations are clear and consistent. Jeremiah’s need for attention and reassurance are also being addressed. He sees a mental health therapist once a week for individual counseling, and he has a child care aid in his foster home who spends one-on-one time with him two evenings a week. While he generally does better with adults than with peers, that may be due, at least in part, to his viewing other kids as competitors for the adult attention he seeks.
Jeremiah is now in the public school system in a behavioral classroom program for all classes but math and reading. His medication therapy is being monitored regularly by his doctor. Jeremiah also has the supports he needs in the classroom to help stay on track. Prior to the disrupted adoptive placement Jeremiah was doing well in a small school setting without an individual education plan for behavior. While some of his behaviors look like clinical attention difficulties, they are believed to be residual effects of his emotional state.
Jeremiah will likely do well in a home where he will have lots of parental time and attention. He would benefit greatly from having a strong father figure who can redirect him and provide a consistent, nurturing, healthy role model. Jeremiah responds well to a nurturing mother figure who is gentle but firm. Jeremiah is no stranger to doing his fair share of chores. When given such responsibilities he gains a sense of pride and accomplishment. Jeremiah is eligible for SSI.
