Child's name: RiverNumber: C6668 Birthdate: 12/99 State: Washington Listed: May 2007, Updated 3/08 River is making progress in his therapeutic group home, where he is benefiting from the high level of structure and supervision that help him to feel safe. His intervention program includes daily interactions with therapeutic child care staff and mental health therapists, as well as other children in the group home. The goals of River’s treatment are to help River attends school in a small, therapeutic classroom on the campus of his group home, where he is in the third grade. It will be very helpful for River’s adoptive folk(s) to have a good grasp of how early neglect and trauma amidst chronic parental substance abuse and domestic violence can impact a child’s sense of well being and safety, and his emotional and behavioral development. Because, River may have been exposed to drugs and alcohol parentally, it would be helpful, too, for his adoptive parents to have a good understanding of possible residual effects of such exposure. His social worker especially wants to hear from couples who have the energy and skills to meet River’s needs. It would be ideal to have prospective adoptive folks get to know River at his group home, where he feels safe and where the staff could spend time with them to help them understand his issues and how best to address his needs. It will be essential for his adoptive folks to be highly supportive of on-going mental health therapy for the foreseeable future and to be willing to be involved with that therapy as requested. River is eligible for Adoption Support.
