DESTINY (9/97), who has an engaging and loving manner, is going to need a very committed, experienced family to continue to help her work through the severe trauma of her early years. A good communicator, Destiny is very verbal and articulate, and insightful about her feelings. She is an avid and talented learner, too, who loves coloring, arts and crafts, and singing. Her ability to enjoy herself and play is wonderful, and she often sparkles with excitement and fun. Destiny is a cutie with short, dark blond hair, penetrating blue eyes, and a bright smile. Legally free, Destiny came into care in mid-2003.

In September 2007, Destiny transitioned into regular foster care with her existing foster family. She is not experiencing anger or aggression and these have really never been issues with her. She does remain hyper-vigilant at times, and needs a structured and predictable environment to help her feel safe. Much of Destiny’s anxiety at this point stems from her wish to know who will adopt her and when. Destiny needs a substantial amount of attention and constant supervision from her care givers.

In the year since her successful move from therapeutic foster care to regular foster care, which is the next step in her journey toward adoption, Destiny has made a very good transition. She continues to learn and practice techniques to lessen her feelings of sadness and anxiety, and to increase her ability for better self control. She is no longer on any type of medication to assist with that. Destiny’s treatment also includes weekly therapy. While her hyper-vigilance, anger, and occasional defiance are easily understood in connection with her past trauma, they can be very challenging. Destiny is very responsive to affection, but at times her affection is indiscriminate, which puts her at risk. Destiny may also have some residual effects of exposure to drugs/alcohol, which could account for her cognitive processing and executive functioning errors. For the foreseeable future, she is going to need a team treatment approach by professionals who can work with her in providing mental health therapy.

Destiny is working at grade level in school. She enjoys reading aloud, by herself and being read to. At times she struggles to stay focused and needs reminders to stay on task. She can be easily distracted.

Destiny has a bond with her birth brothers, one is in an out of state adoptive placement and one is in treatment in Oregon. Destiny will need a family who will support these on going relationships.

Destiny’s prospective adoptive family will need to provide much love, patience, attention, stability, and consistency in a structured environment. She needs parent(s) who can spend a lot of time with her, as at times and depending on her anxiety level, she needs substantial help with routines and independent play. When Destiny becomes anxious, her personal boundaries are especially weak. The family needs to understand that besides love and good behavioral norms, a child like Destiny will need ongoing therapy. Her adoptive folk(s) will need professional supports to understand the effects of long-term trauma and stress on this child. Destiny’s adoptive parent(s) need to be loving, caring, strong people.

Destiny is an amazingly resilient young lady who has done a tremendous amount of therapeutic work. While life with Destiny can be challenging and demanding at times, it will also be highly rewarding for the right family. She is fun, energetic, loving and full of life. She truly wants a growing up family to help her reach her full potential.
