JOSEPH (4/92) is a handsome, outgoing teenager of Alaska Native heritage with a very sweet disposition and some nice strengths for his adoptive family to build upon. Developmentally on target, he is intelligent, friendly, funny, and assertive. He enjoys church activities and has developed relationships with several families through his church participation. Of course, Joe enjoys listening to music and playing video games. He is now in tenth grade and doing well.

Joe, who is legally free for adoption, came into foster care in late 2003. Although not particularly close to his biological family, Joe is close to others, such as a previous foster/adopt family and church friends. He will be counting on his adoptive folk(s) to help him continue to have contact with the people who have been significant in his life.

While Joe is often well behaved, he has been presenting some concerning behaviors that really need to be addressed through counseling. His interactions with other kids are suffering due to aggressive and sometimes intimidating behavior, and he is having difficulty being truthful. While these issues can be managed with behavioral management interventions, having the opportunity to talk about issues of past trauma and loss, as well as about what is going on for him currently to trigger these behaviors, may help him to make the necessary behavioral changes. In addition, Joe may benefit from having additional support in managing his high energy and attention difficulties.

Although Joe’s worker is especially interested in hearing from two-parent families who truly enjoy teenagers and want the opportunity to guide and parent a son through adolescence and into adulthood, the worker doesn’t want to miss out on hearing from those special single dads and moms who have wonderful skills and strong support systems.

Having a permanent family of his own is important to Joe now, and he knows that it will be important to have that sense of belonging throughout his adult life, too.
