Legally free, RANDY (10/97) is a small yet energetic boy who enjoys animals. Randy has a strong desire to please his caregivers and other significant adults in his life. One way he does this is by helping out with chores. He especially enjoys helping in the kitchen and putting out his own clothes for the next day. Learning to ride a bike was a special accomplishment for him, and he still enjoys showing off his riding skills. A fan of TV cartoons, Randy is especially fond of Sponge Bob Square Pants and Curious George. His favorite food is oatmeal and he is proud that he can make it himself.

Randy is in a Life Skills program for children with developmental disabilities and symptoms of autism, where he has a one-on-one para-educator, who helps to mediate the over stimulation Randy can experience in the classroom, and to make sure Randy is safe. Results of testing by the school psychologist will be available to families who are interested in adopting Randy.

Randy has difficulty retaining memories of his life experiences, so he does not learn from past mistakes. His expressive and comprehensive communication skills are limited, and he did not speak in complete sentences until he was seven years old. His vocabulary remains very small. Randy is able to verbalize his needs, but he also has some sign language skills as well. He may benefit from having a family willing to continue utilizing sign. Randy’s vision is 350/375, and he requires corrective lenses.

Randy does well with other children in his foster home, and benefits from having good supervision and his own room. Randy does have some issues with aggressiveness and has shown behaviors that will require extra supervision by caregivers. Randy has benefited greatly by a foster home with a solid, predictable routine. He does best when he knows what to expect.

Randy needs adoptive folk(s) familiar with the needs of children with developmental disabilities who have suffered abuse and neglect during their early years. Having a good grasp of behavioral symptoms of autism will be very helpful, too. His adoptive family will need to be able to commit to being there for Randy throughout his lifetime and be a resource for him as an adult. Randy’s social worker will consider all families that have the resources to meet the complex needs Randy will have throughout his life.

Randy is SSI eligible.
