Child's name: KaneNumber: C6352 Birthdate: 5/94 State: Washington Listed:August 2006, Updated 11/07 Photographs by Northern Exposures The individuals who provide his daily care and understand his special needs experience him as a clever, social, fun child with an eye for detail. Having parents or other persons caring for him who are able to communicate authority in a constructive manner will be a key to Kane doing well. He has the ability to adjust to new environments and gets used to new folks quickly. He has demonstrated that he can form attachments with significant adults in his life. Kane benefits most from a predictable routine and one on one adult attention. With his behavioral and academic needs being met through an educational program associated with his group home, he loves attending school and completes his schoolwork with assistance. In his classroom, he has plenty of one-on-one attention, as well as the support of a staff person who acts as a school aide. Kane has made huge gains in the areas of written language and mathematics over the past couple of years. According to school reports, Kane is well liked by his teachers, peers, and staff. Kane also loves riding the bus to school and using picture cards, which are just some of the visual tools used to help him learn and understand one and two-step directions. Kane is also able to utilize some sign language to communicate with his caregivers, as he is nonverbal. Kane’s significant emotional and behavioral issues are symptomatic of autism and include limited ability to focus attention, as well as significant social, speech and language delays. Kane requires constant supervision and redirection. Left to his own devices or without attentive monitoring by an adult who understands his issues, Kane can get into incredible mischief and unsafe situations. With his lack of impulse control and other issues, he can easily become destructive. Kane’s social worker is looking for a family with a strong support system that includes extended family and friends, as well as the demonstrated ability to be a strong advocate for educational, therapeutic, and community services. Kane needs a structured, supportive home with a parent who has the time, inclination, stamina, and skills to meet his needs and provide the high level of supervision he needs. While parenting Kane is not for the faint of heart, there will be plenty of rewards for the right person or persons who can help him reveal more and more of the happy, fun child inside of him that is waiting for more opportunities to be expressed.
