Legally free, RICHARD (10/92) is a terrific teen who just gets better all the time. Gregarious and outgoing, he gets along wonderfully well with other kids and with adults. He enjoys reading, playing GameBoy and participating in any team sports. Richard also likes to play chess and board games like Monopoly. In school Richard is doing well in his mainstream classroom. More than anything, Richard wants to be adopted and to have a family of his one that will be there for him.

Richard has a strong relationship with his counselor and talks openly in his individual sessions. In addition to providing a safe place to talk about issues of past trauma, trust and attachment, his participation in counseling has also helped Richard to strengthen his personal safety skills; and the combination of counseling and medication therapy has given him a huge boost forward in managing his attention difficulties and high energy. A wonderful way for his adoptive parents to show their love and commitment to Richard would be to participate with him in family counseling during his transition into their home.

Richard first came into the foster care system as a young child. While over the years he has had multiple foster placements, he has not lost his ability to connect with others and to form relationships. He has bonds with a half-brother from foster care as well as his current foster mother and a previous foster family. He would benefit form being able to maintain his connections to these people who have been important in his life.

Richard would do best in a small single or two-parent home, with folk(s) who will be able to provide the time and attention he needs to build his self esteem and move forward in his life. Any aged siblings would be fine. It will be important for Richard’s adoptive folk(s) to have a good grasp of how early neglect and abuse and lack of safety can interfere with a child’s sense of belonging and safety.
