Legally free, CHRIS (12/95) is a very cute, athletic boy of African American and Caucasian heritage with a huge smile. Chris’s strengths are his intelligence, sense of humor, and very good athletic skills. Right on track developmentally with no medical issues, Chris does best when he is kept busy. Some of his favorite activities are gymnastics, swimming, jumping on the trampoline, and skateboarding. He also likes watching movies and playing video games. Chris can be very kind and giving toward others and fun to hangout with. While he enjoys playing with other kids, he could benefit from developing his conflict resolution skills. Chris really benefits from having attentive adults who encourage and praise him and spend time with him every day. Chris came into foster care following his birth.

Chris’s mental health counseling program is helping him to increase his ability to trust and form attachments, lessen his anxiety and his hyperactivity and attention difficulties, and develop appropriate personal boundaries. Academically, Chris receives special education help in a behavioral classroom.

Chris hit a rough patch early this year. To help him feel safe while working on his issues, he was placed in a residential treatment program. In that highly structured setting, he has been able to interact with child care staff and counselors without having to worry about trusting and forming attachments. While it took some time for the consequences of his behavior to really get his attention, he is making progress.

The most significant progress that Chris can achieve will likely be in a permanent family who can hang in there with him over the rough spots. A family that has some experience with children who have behavioral special needs will likely be able to meet his needs best. This could be an ideal time for a family to come forward. It would give parent(s) the time to get acquainted with him while he is still in care, and at the same time, the parent(s) would have be able to learn from the child care staff and therapists how best to deal with Chris’ behavioral issues. Chris can succeed in a family where his adoptive folk(s) understand his issues and where he will have the therapeutic supports and educational support to move forward.
