Legally free, JEFF (5/92) is a friendly teen who enjoys sports, especially those that require agility and stamina, like basketball and football. Jeff likes to spend time at the local Boys and Girls Club, where he gets lots of kudos for his athletic ability from adults. Jeff’s manners, good communication skills, and lively imagination are assets that the adults around him enjoy. He is a likeable teenager. Jeff is rightly proud of his personal growth over the past year, and he is reveling in being part of a large foster family, where everyone participates in extracurricular activities at school, church, and youth groups. Jeff loves all types of games and will spend hours building models with Legos or putting things together. He works hard at his assigned tasks and is proud of his work. Jeff came into foster care in January 1998.

Now in tenth grade, he continues to do well in school. Jeff is primarily a visual learner, who has demonstrated that he performs best when given clear goals. He is an intelligent boy, with an excellent memory. Jeff thrives on positive feedback, and he was very pleased when he was selected last June as the “most academically improved student” for the entire school year. He continues to benefit from having behavioral support.

Jeff continues to work on developing his social skills with other kids and his problem solving abilities. Jeff has taken it upon himself to develop more effective tools to help him deescalate when he’s frustrated. These days he is more likely to take time out in his room to blow off steam.

Jeff is clearly benefiting from counseling and remains willing to take an active role. In his adoptive home, counseling should be part of Jeff’s routine support system, and his new parents need to be willing to participate as requested.

It will be important for Jeff’s adoptive parents to have a good grasp of how early neglect and abuse amidst adult substance abuse and lack of safety can impact on a child’s sense of well being and emotional and behavioral development. Jeff could do well with an experienced single mom or dad or a couple, where he will be the only child or the youngest of one or two much older siblings.
